Let’s use “Bunion” as an example to illustrate this :-
Bunions are incredibly painful conditions. They are commonly seen among women who wear high-heel shoes and shoes with pointy toes and tight toe-boxes. Bunions form slowly over time, usually over years.
Wearing improper shoes creates imbalances in the feet and lower legs. Some of the muscles are getting tight and shortened while others are getting lengthened. Your body compensates by over-using other muscles and you keep walking in an unnatural way. Your gait changes slowly and unnoticeably.
The conditions around the big toes and the legs change and progress:
- In the very beginning, you won’t feel any discomfort or pain.
- A few years later, there are thickened skins around the outside edge and the bottom of the big toe. Calluses and corns are formed
- Gradually, you feel tenderness and burning sensation around the big toe and on the shins of the lower legs.
- Pain can be felt in the toes and feet.
- You have trouble walking; the big toe turned towards the second toe (malalignment).
- The bony protrusion at the base of the big toe is significant, it turns red and inflamed.
- The conditions get more and more complicated, you might eventually have other diagnoses such as rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, metatarsalgia, hammertoes …
This is an over-simplified description of a series of progressions. The kinetic chain of events all started by wearing high-heels and tight toe-boxes.
Even though you might have stopped wearing high-heels for years, the imbalances and malalignments are still there limiting the blood circulation and functions of your toes, ankles, lower legs and possibly all the way up the back, shoulders and head.
Obviously, the Root Cause is the imbalances and malalignments of body structures and tissues.
Our ultimate goal is to eliminate those imbalances and malalignments so that your body can return to its natural balance and alignment with restored circulations, functions and flexibility.
Recently, BAST treated a lady wearing more than 20 years of high-heels. Her left big toe almost crossed over to the second toe, it was reddened and inflamed. She was having excruciating pain and taking medications for arthritis.
After 3 sessions of BAST treatments, the redness and inflammation disappeared and she no longer felt the pain in her big toe.
Unbelievable, isn’t it? The real differences are, we identify the true nature of the problems and use some combination of techniques that can deliver efficient and meaningful changes both physiologically and pathologically.
This example illustrates the importance of the “Balance” and “Alignment” concept. It holds true to numerous different pain and health conditions in other parts of the body as well.
Once the imbalances and malalignments are corrected, your pain management goals can be successfully realized.
